April 21, 2010: Anniversary Celebration!

On Wednesday April 21, 2010, over 550 guests were in attendance at the Cunard Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia to join in the celebration of two significant anniversaries – the 10th Anniversary of the annual Faculty of Medicine and Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation (DMRF) Community of Scholar Awards and the 30th Anniversary of the annual Molly Appeal campaign.

Emcee Alison Edwards, Executive Director for DMRF, introduced presentations by Dalhousie Dean of Medicine – Dr. Tom Marrie, Dalhousie University President – Dr. Tom Traves, and DMRF Chairman – Mr. Frank Sobey.

Over the previous nine years, Community of Scholar awards have been presented to 85 members of the Dalhousie Faculty of Medicine for excellence in professionalism, education and research. At this year’s anniversary event, 8 more individuals were recognized with awards including the following DMRF research awards:

2010 DMRF Award of Excellence for Basic Research
Dr. Christopher Sinal, Department of Pharmacology

2010 DMRF Award of Excellence for Clinical Research
Dr. Ryan D’Arcy, Department of Radiology

2010 DMRF Max Forman Senior Research Prize
Dr. Susan Howlett, Departments of Pharmacology & Geriatric Medicine

In addition, a video presentation celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Molly Appeal campaign.  It was 30 years ago, in 1980, when a housekeeper named Molly overheard her employer being asked for a major gift by a Foundation board member.  As the board member was leaving the home, Molly slipped them $5.  She said that she fervently believed in medical research and felt that if we all gave what we could personally afford, then together we could make a major difference.
