Molly Appeal

The Molly Appeal – an annual fundraising campaign for research at Dalhousie Medical School in Halifax, Nova Scotia – began in 1980, just one year after Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation was established. It all started with one woman, Molly Moore, who took the simple but dramatic step of giving five dollars to the new foundation.

A woman of modest means, Molly truly believed in the power of medical research. “Research is the best medicine” was her motto. She also believed that if many people gave to this cause – even small amounts each – that together they would make a big difference.

She was right. Since the first Molly Appeal, people in the Maritimes and beyond have given more than $4 million to the Molly Appeal. These donations have played a pivotal role in helping Dalhousie Medical School develop into a world-class research institution. The research community has grown steadily, attracted top scientists and clinicians to the region, and made many important discoveries that are already saving and improving people’s lives.

In 2002, Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation began dedicating the proceeds of each annual Molly Appeal to one of four key areas of research emphasis and excellence at Dalhousie Medical School: neuroscience, cardiovascular, the related fields of infection, inflammation and immunity, and cancer. By focusing on these key areas, the Foundation is helping the local research community build on its existing strengths. At the same time, it is addressing the most urgent health research needs in the region.
