The generosity of one woman – the late Mrs. Beatrice Hunter – was the pivotal act that launched the Dalhousie Cancer Research Program (DCRP). In 1999, Mrs. Hunter bequeathed $13 million to DMRF for cancer research, in memory of her parents, Dr. Owen and Mrs. Pearle Cameron. Her bequest became the Cameron Endowment, which provides annual funding of more than $500,000 to local cancer research.
“The Cameron Endowment is the jewel in the crown of the DCRP,” says DCRP Chair, Dr. Eva Grunfeld. “Through careful stewardship of this endowment, the DCRP has established prestigious cancer research positions – like the Cameron Chair in Basic Cancer Research and Cameron Scientist Award – that are enabling Dalhousie to recruit some of the most talented investigators in the county.”
