For the first time ever, the 2006 Molly Appeal raised money to fund scholarships. Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation and the Dalhousie Neuroscience Institute worked together to create the Molly Neuroscience Traineeships. The traineeships provide substantial salary awards to 15 top graduate students who choose to pursue neuroscience at Dalhousie Medical School.
“Graduate students are the lifeblood of the research effort,” says Dr. Steven Barnes, director of the Neuroscience Institute. “We have 60 leading neuroscience researchers at Dalhousie Medical School who absolutely rely on graduate students to conduct their laboratory experiments. The students are learning the tools and techniques of the trade, while helping make the discoveries that are transforming health care.”
Senior graduate student Colin Franz shone as the campaign’s spokesperson, playing a key role in making the 2006 Molly Appeal very successful. That campaign raised nearly $240,000 to support the future of neuroscience research through the Molly Neuroscience Traineeships. Erin Mazerolle, recruited through the Traineeship program, continued to build on that success as our 2010 campaign spokesperson.
