2008 - Dr. Yukiko Asada, Department of Community Health & Epidemiology

Yukiko Asada’s mission is to challenge society with tough questions about equity in health systems and health outcomes. Dr. Asada measures access to health services, as well as health outcomes and resource allocation, to explore equity problems. She recently published a book, Health Inequality: Morality and Measurement, to shed light on these issues for better policy-making. Click here for full story.

2007 - Dr. K.S. Joseph, Department of Pediatrics

Dr. K.S. Joseph is one of Canada’s leading perinatal epidemiologists, and he has shed light on such issues as older maternal age, preterm birth and infant mortality. As a member of the Canadian Perinatal Surveillance System, he plays a key role in national surveillance of perinatal trends. Click here for full story.

2007 - Dr. Linda Dodds, Department of Epidemiology

Dr. Linda Dodds is a perinatal epidemiologist and studies exposures and events that pose dangers to mothers and babies. She examines the effects of ‘in utero’ environmental exposures on fetuses and newborns, and probes events in pregnancy, delivery and the newborn period that may have long-term consequences for children and mothers. 2005 – Dr. David Zitner, Medical Informatics

Dr. Zitner has played a vital role in the development of medical informatics in Canada. Among his many achievements, he led the creation of the country’s first graduate program in health informatics, Dalhousie’s Master of Health Informatics, and the CIHR/Post-doc Strategic Training Program in Health Informatics. His vision and leadership – as an educator, researcher, physician and mentor – are a constant inspiration to his students and colleagues.

2003 – Dr. Jocelyn Downie, Health Law Institute

Dr. Jocelyn Downie received the Award of Excellence for Research in Health Law in 2003. Dr. Downie is director of Dalhousie’s Health Law Institute and a member of the faculties of medicine and law. A tremendously prolific researcher, she is the foremost health law expert in Canada on end-of-life issues.

2002 – Dr. Charles Weijer, Department of Bioethics

Dr. Charles Weijer, an associate professor in the Department of Bioethics, is largely responsible for the development of an academic program in research ethics in the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University. An accomplished scholar, Dr. Weijer is actively contributing to the critical and emerging literature in research ethics related to clinical research on vulnerable patient populations. He has also published groundbreaking work on the ethics of placebo use in clinical trials.

2001 – Dr. Francoise Baylis, Department of Bioethics

Dr. Francoise Baylis, an associate professor in the departments of Bioethics and Philosophy, received the first Award of Excellence for Research in Bioethics. Dr. Baylis’ internationally recognized work probes ethical considerations in such fields as health care, research, biotechnology, genetics, and women and reproductive health. Recent work includes articles on the ethics of creating human embryos for stem cell research, and participation in a three-year international project to examine the ethical implications of new medical treatments and technologies that can be used to enhance or alter human capacities and characteristics. Dr. Baylis’ desire to make a real difference in clinical practice and health science policy has led her to serve on several national and international committees, in addition to her research, writing and teaching activities.
