Named in honour of Dr. J. Donald Hatcher, Dean of Medicine this research award recognizes excellence in medical research and is offered to the final year undergraduate medical student, who at graduation is considered to have carried out the most meritorious and significant research at Dalhousie during the undergraduate medical program including electives.
Current Recipient:
Dr. Jeremy Murphy, for achievement in glaucoma pathogenesis studies
Dr. Murphy, an Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences resident with a keen interest in research, received the 2011/2012 Hatcher Prize for Medical Research. During his undergraduate medical training, Dr. Murphy conducted an in-depth exploration of mechanisms that may lead to the development and progression of glaucoma, with supervision from Dr. Balwantray Chauhan. He presented his findings at two meetings of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and successfully published articles in the British Journal of Ophthalmology and Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science.
